Tom Petty Confirmed Dead After Premature Report

Tue, 2017-10-03 20:19

Legendary rock musician Tom Petty passed away on the evening of Oct. 2 due to cardiac arrest, his manager confirmed. Petty had been falsely reported dead earlier that day while he was still in the hospital.

According to CNN, news of Petty's death began to circulate at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time, when TMZ reported that Petty had just been taken off of life support after having been hospitalized with no brain activity. One half-hour later, CBS tweeted that Petty had died.

"Tom Petty, legendary rocker, is dead at 66. The musician reportedly suffered cardiac arrest," the tweet read, along with a link to an obituary citing the Los Angeles Police Department as the source of his death.

Other celebrities soon began to express their sympathy on social media.

"It’s shocking, crushing news," said Bob Dylan in a statement. "I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him."

Other celebrities who preemptively spoke on Petty's death included John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and Ed Helms, Variety reports.

Within a few hours, the LAPD reached out to CBS to tell the network it could not yet confirm Petty's death.

"The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty," the department posted on Twitter. "Initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources."

The LAPD confirmed in a separate tweet that they had "no investigative role in this matter" and that they "apologize for any inconvenience in reporting."

CNN reports that in addition to frustrating fans, the mistake angered Petty's daughter, AnnaKim Violet Petty. Between Instagram posts about her father, she lashed out at Rolling Stone, which was among the news outlets that reported early news of his death.

"My dad is not dead yet but your f**king magazine is," she wrote.

Official news of the musician's death came from longtime Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers manager Tony Dimitriades. He said that the rocker was rushed to the hospital after having gone into cardiac arrest that morning and died around 8:40 p.m. Pacific time. He says that Petty was surrounded by his family, friends and bandmates.

The late musician had just finished the last show of his most recent tour on Sept. 25 at the Hollywood Bowl, The Wrap reports.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner's office is still conducting a investigation into Petty's death.
