Mexico Just Legalized Medical Pot Nationwide Exposing America’s Oppression

Mon, 2017-06-26 14:28
By Rachel Blevins via The Free Thought Project

One year after Mexican President Peña Nieto began speaking out and criticizing the global drug policy, Mexico has now legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes.

As a growing number of individual states in the U.S. stand up to the federal government on marijuana prohibition, Mexico legalized medical marijuana nationwide on Monday.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto issued a decree, following the bill’s overwhelming approval from Mexico’s Senate in December, with a vote of 98-7, and from Mexico’s Lower House of Congress in April, with a vote of 374-7 vote.

“The ruling eliminates the prohibition and criminalization of acts related to the medicinal use of marijuana and its scientific research, and those relating to the production and distribution of the plant for these purposes.”

The decree stated that the nation’s Ministry of Health would be in charge of “public policies regulating the medicinal use of pharmacological derivatives of cannabis sativa, indica and Americana or marijuana, including tetrahydrocannabinol, its isomers and stereochemical variants, as well as how to regulate the research and national production of them.”

The measure was also applauded by Mexico’s Secretary of Health, Dr. José Narro Robles. “I welcome the approval of the therapeutic use of cannabis in Mexico,” he wrote on Twitter.

Me congratulo por la aprobación de la iniciativa del uso terapéutico de #cannabis en #México, por parte de @Mx_Diputados y @senadomexicano.

— José Narro Robles (@JoseNarroR) May 2, 2017

While Peña Nieto was once a staunch opponent of marijuana legalization, he appears to have changed his tune, following a nationwide public debate on legalization in early 2016. He is now encouraging the U.S. to follow Mexico’s lead.

During a speech at the 2016 United Nations General Assembly Special Sessions, Peña Nieto called for a change in global drug policy, and said he believes drug use should be viewed as a “public health problem,” and users should not face criminal charges.

“So far, the solutions [to control drugs and crime] implemented by the international community have been frankly insufficient,” Peña Nieto said. “We must move beyond prohibition to effective prevention.”

Peña Nieto introduced a measure in April 2016 that would have decriminalized the possession of up to one ounce of cannabis. It would have also freed anyone who was on trial, or serving time for possession of up to one ounce of marijuana. The bill was stalled in Congress.

New Bionic Lens Could Give You Perfect Vision For The Rest Of Your Life

Mon, 2017-06-26 14:20

By Ian Crossland via Minds

After eight years and $3 million of research, trials and international patents, Doctor Garth Webb, of Ocumetics Technology Corp. presented the Ocumetic Bionic Lens to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, suggesting that corrective, regular and contact lenses and Lasik will soon be obsolete.  He added that this technology will ensure that a person will never get cataracts.

In an eight minute, near painless procedure, the lens would be folded into a syringe and injected into the eye where is unfolds and adheres to the eye’s natural lens within 10 seconds.  Immediately after the procedure, the patient can see more clearly.

The lens protects the eye’s natural lens from any forms of decay and the surgery is considered safer than laser surgery.

Because the materials involved have been used for so long, getting approval for the surgery is relatively simple.  It is expected to be widely availabe in Canada by 2017 and is projected to cost around $3,000 per eye when it is introduced.  Webb explains that as the technology becomes more widespread and easier to administer that the cost will drop.

The lens is made from inert materials and does not change the physiology of the eye, and it gives the recipient 3x better vision than normal.

Scientists Are Developing A ‘Hangover-Free Alcohol’ That May Replace Regular Spirits By 2050

Mon, 2017-06-26 14:03

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Though cannabis has been proven to be one of the safest recreational drugs in the world, it remains restricted in many countries worldwide. As a result, most people reach for alcohol when they want to let loose on the weekends and enjoy social time with others. An unfortunate side effect of alcohol, however, is the hangover one is left with the day afterward. Fortunately, one scientist in particular is developing a synthetic alcohol which is said to be alcohol-free.

The synthetic alcohol is called ‘alcosynth’ and is designed to mimic the “positive” effect of alcohol. That means one could drink without developing dry mouth, nausea and a throbbing head the day afterward. Its creator, Professor David Nutt, says he has patented around 90 different alcosynth compounds and intends for it to be on liquor store shelves within a few years. By 2050, he wants the synthetic alcohol to completely replace the “regular” stuff. ‘

According to The Independent, two alcosynth varieties are presently being tested. Said Nutt, “It will be there alongside the scotch and the gin, they’ll dispense the alcosynth into your cocktail and then you’ll have the pleasure without damaging your liver and your heart.” At present, two alcosynth varieties are being tested. “They go very nicely into mojitos. They even go into something as clear as a Tom Collins. One is pretty tasteless, the other has a bitter taste,” Nutt told The Independent.

It took several years of researching the brain and monitoring the effects of the synthetic alcohol to develop a non-toxic replacement. “We know a lot about the brain science of alcohol; it’s become very well understood in the last 30 years,” said Professor Nutt. “So we know where the good effects of alcohol are mediated in the brain, and can mimic them. And by not touching the bad areas, we don’t have the bad effects.”

According to Alcohol Concern, drinking is the third-largest risk factor for disease and death in the UK. If more people were to switch to a non-toxic alcohol replacement, health concerns related to alcohols’ consumption would decrease. “People want healthier drinks,” said Professor Nutt. “The drinks industry knows that by 2050 alcohol will be gone.”

The effects of alcosynth are said to last a couple of hours. And, after consuming a certain amount of the drink, the effects “round off.”

Professor Nutt said, “We haven’t tested it to destruction yet, but it’s safer than drinking too much alcohol. With clever pharmacology, you can limit and put a ceiling on the effects, so you can’t ever get as ill or kill yourself, unlike with drinking a lot of vodka.”

What I Learned From 45 Days Of Ice Cold Showers (Including 11 Benefits)

Mon, 2017-06-26 13:57

BLuke Miller Truth Theory

I just got out of the most beautiful shower I have ever experienced, it was hot and warmed my soul on a level it has not been warmed for 45 days. I just left the jungle after being there for 28 days, prior to this I spent 17 days in accommodation which only had cold showers- it only dawned on me a few days ago that this may have effects that go further than me just being cold during washing .

Paul Chek, Wim Hof and Tim Ferriss are just 3 of the well known figures who tout the benefits of cold showers:

Paul Chek said in one of his posts: “Cold showers offer the body a dose of yin (female) energy. This is essential because water and water energies are used to counterbalance fire, or energy produced by metabolism, chemical reactions, thinking, and inflammation in the body”

Some of the points I raise will cite studies others are just claims I will make clear in the article which are which and provide links should you want to investigate further:

Will Power

Jumping in a cold shower definitely tests your mind, after 45 days I have to say bar a few showers when I was incredibly overheated- it was never much fun. It helps build your willpower and to just do something regardless of if it is pleasant or not, in the name of good health and hygiene.

Improved Attention

It allows you to focus and maintain focused for the day, this is impart due to the fact that to have a cold shower you really need to centre yourself through breathwork. Think of it like ice cold meditation. Another more obvious reason is it is hard to not be alert after having cold water tipped on your head!

Wakes You Up

There is no pick me up in the world quite like that of a cold shower, it is not as convenient as a quick shot of espresso, but your body will thank you later, plus the energy levels are far more healthy and sustainable.

Hair Loss

I could not find any studies, but their are many people and sources online claiming that one of the side effects of cold showers is an improvement in the strength of their hair.

Helps Combat Depression

Depression is a debilitating disease that affects approximately 10% of the population, and while I know jumping in an ice cold shower is probably the last thing you want to do when it strikes, it still according to this study is highly beneficial. Cold showers stimulate a part of the brain known as “the blue spot”. This is the brains primary source of noradrenaline – which plays an active role in combating depression.

Helps With Weight Loss

There are 2 types of fat in the body- white and brown fat- brown fat is the stuff we want to promote for optimal health.

According to this study cold showers help to activate brown fat, which results in an increase in the calories your body burns. The study showed that- cold temperatures can show an increase of up to 15X the normal amount.

Increases Dopamine

Dopamine is a feel good chemical in the brain Which reduces stress and improves your mental state in the right quantity a recent study showed that cold water therapy can increase your dopamine by up to 530%.

Strengthens Your Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is a group of vessels running throughout your body that helps to remove waste and bacteria. Your lymphatic system is like your bodies own personal cleansing system. A 2014 study found “Repeated cold water stimulations reduced frequency of infections; increased peak expiratory flow, lymphocyte counts, and expression of gamma-interferon; modulated interleukin expression; and improved quality of life (QOL) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”

Improved Immune System

Our immune system is what keeps us fighting off all kinds of nasties that are trying to take away our life force- according to a 1996 study– “stress-inducing noninfectious stimuli, such as repeated cold water immersions, which increased metabolic rate due to shivering the elevated blood concentrations of catecholamines, activated the immune system to a slight extent.”

Strengthens Your Sympathetic Nervous System

Wim Hof- who is also known as the iceman is a Dutch world record holder who is known for his ability to resist cold. But he doesn’t only do it for the records, he has devises a system that can be used for training yourself to do the same. Along with improvement shown in the immune system, his method has also been shown to strengthen the sympathetic nervous system.

Decreased Sickness

In 2015 3018 healthy participants took part in a study which included a hot to cold shower for 30 consecutive days- the study showed “a 29% reduction in sickness absence for (hot-to-) cold shower regimen”

I have had a dig around and found some incredible benefits that occur as a result of cold showers and cold therapy, next I want to share an intimate moment with you below in the jungle shower- no nudity I promise, but a monkey does decide to join me (no joke):

This Woman Got Pregnant 13 Times In 10 Years Simply To Avoid Prison

Sun, 2017-06-25 13:16

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Some people are willing to go to extreme lengths to avoid the repercussions of their actions. Unfortunately, those kinds of people don’t care who they hurt in the process. Such is the story of a Chinese woman, whose surname is Zeng, who was convicted for corruption in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

As Hindustan Times reports, Zeng was sentenced to life imprisonment but was able to evade prison for a decade by becoming pregnant thirteen times within ten years. She actually claimed to be pregnant 14 times, but one was proven to be false. The remaining 13 were true, however.

On October 17,  2005, she was sentenced to life imprisonment by Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court. Because she was pregnant at the time, however, she was placed on probation. When Zeng knew she would soon be placed in prison at a later date, she became pregnant again. After receiving probation a second time, she underwent an abortion.

The following pregnancies afterward, Zeng committed the same scheme. She would receive probation then have an abortion. After honing in on her tactic of evasion, the Municipal Bureau of Justice resubmitted the suggestion to put her in prison. Finally, at age 39, she has started serving her sentence.

Victory! Court Finds That Approval Of Dakota Access Pipeline Violated The Law

Sun, 2017-06-25 11:53

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

In April of 2016, hundreds of people gathered near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to protest the development of the four-state Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Supporters of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe proclaimed that the pipeline’s development crossed through land promised to the Native American tribe centuries before, and that it could potentially contaminate the Missouri river. Until December 4, 2017, when the U.S. Army Corps denied an easement to the parent company of the project, Dakota Energy Transfers, did thousands of activists gather on the plains in solidarity.

Unfortunately, shortly after President Trump took office, the DAPL was given the green light and construction resumed. Even before it was fully online, a leak occurred, solidifying activists’ concern about its development. Nonetheless, there was little anyone could do. The heavy feelings of failure recently lifted, however, due to a small victory, as a federal judge recently ruled that the federal permits authorizing the pipeline to cross the Missouri river near the Standing Rock reservation violated the law in certain respects.

Stand With Standing Rock reports that in a 91-page decision, Judge James boasberg wrote that “the Court agrees that [the Corps] did not adequately consider the impacts of an oil spill on fishing rights, hunting rights, or environmental justice, or the degree to which the pipeline’s effects are likely to be highly controversial.” It was not determined by the Court whether or not the pipeline operations should be shut off. Judge Boasberg did request additional briefing on the subject and a status conference for the following week, however.

Following the development, Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault II said, “This is a major victory for the Tribe and we commend the courts for upholding the law and doing the right thing. The previous administration painstakingly considered the impacts of this pipeline, and President Trump hastily dismissed these careful environmental considerations in favor of political and personal interests. We applaud the courts for protecting our laws and regulations from undue political influence and will ask the Court to shut down pipeline operations immediately.”

The Tribe, represented by the nonprofit environmental law firm Earthjustice, has filed a lawsuit which challenges the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision for issuing a permit for the pipeline. The opposition argues that its construction violates several environmental laws.

“This decision marks an important turning point. Until now, the rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe have been disregarded by the builders of the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Trump administration—prompting a well-deserved global outcry,” said Earthjustice attorney Jan Hasselman. “The federal courts have stepped in where our political systems have failed to protect the rights of Native communities.”

Though the Court did rule that the federal permits authorizing the DAPL to cross the Missouri river did violate the law, it ruled against the Tribe on several other issues, such as the reversal allowing the pipeline complied with the law in certain respects.

This Salt Water Battery Won’t Corrode And Can Power Your Home For 10 Years

Every day, new innovations which have profound implications due to their sustainability factors are being unveiled. One of the most recent is a salt water battery that is no bigger than a dishwasher yet can power your home for years.

According to CNBC, Aquion Energy developed a sustainable off-grid solar battery, powered by Aspen Solar batteries, that can handle daily use and requires zero maintenance. Because the batteries can handle up to 3,000 full cycles, or 3,000 days and nights, they can literally power one’s home for over 10 years.

Rather than use two lead plates submerged in a solution of sulfuric acid and water to generate energy, the salt water batteries use a solution of salt water. In result, they are far better for the environment and can last an astonishing amount of time. Best of all, the batteries have no chemicals to leak and will not corrode. It’s because Aspen Solar Batteries have been proven to be sustainable that they are the first to ever receive the Cradle to Cradle Certification™.

The batteries, which will operate during power outages, will cost a consumer $1,000 to $3,000. At present, 10 dealers in the United States are selling the salt water batteries. As The Homestead Guru explains, the batteries’ main competition are lithium ion batteries that are composed of toxic materials and pollute the environment. Lithium ion batteries are also flammable, whereas the Aspen Solar Battery is not. In fact, the company even tried to set its batteries on fire, which you can watch below:

The new design for the batteries allows a homeowner to discharge the output down to 90%. This ensures all the power is harnessed and none goes to waste. In contrast, lead batteries are only able to be discharged to 50%. If you’re interested in purchasing a salt water battery, visit Aquion’s website.

The Secret Reason We Eat Meat, According To Psychologist Dr. Melanie Joy

Sat, 2017-06-24 13:08

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Why do humans eat meat? If you ask the average Joe, they’ll tell you it’s because meat tastes good. If you ask Dr. Melanie Joy, however, who has been studying the psychological drive behind eating meat for decades, she’ll give you a much darker — albeit interesting — answer.  As EducateInspireChange reports, Dr. Joy believes humans eat meat due to the long-engrained ideology of carnism, versus veganism.

“Carnism is a dominant ideology, which means it’s embedded deeply in society to the point that it’s considered ‘just the way things are,’” Joy explained. “But just because something isn’t recognized or is viewed as ‘how things are’ doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Racism wasn’t recognized as a problem or ideology at a point in history but that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. It [carnism] has just been around for so long that it’s taken for granted.”

Referring to kids eating chicken wings in her example, she added: “When we’re born into a world with a dominant ideology, we can’t help but see the world through that lens. There are people in this world who absolutely need to eat meat because geographically or socially, that’s where they are. Most people, though, have a choice when it comes to eating animals, they’re just not aware of it because they’re blinded by the ideology.”

Watch the animated video below:

The psychologist explains that one of the methods which perpetuates carnism is keeping the process of slaughter and processing out of sight. When cows, chickens, pigs and other livestock are milked, butchered, or kept in tiny crates away from the public’s eye, it remains easy to keep the populace ignorant about what takes place in modern-day agricultural factories.

During her lesson, Joy presented a few examples that stamp out the notion that carnism is “right” or “intelligent.” For instance, she shared that an average pig has the intelligence of a 3-year-old human being. She also relayed that chickens are able to distinguish between 100 different faces of members of their species — they also have about 30 different calls to signal types of threats. Additionally, she explained that scientists have determined that certain fish have intelligence and pain receptors; this is why in some places in the world, it is illegal to keep fish in small bowls or to boil lobsters alive.

Joy added that agro-businesses go to great lengths to keep the public ignorant about how violent and cruel the process of making meat actually is. Like Paul McCartney said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” Joy’s ultimate goal is to prompt people to acknowledge that there is, in fact, an ideology. She elaborates on this in her TEDX Talk, “Beyond Carnism and Toward Rational, Authentic Food Choices,” which has become one of the top one percent most viewed talks of all time.

Six Photographers Took The Same Man’s Picture, However Each Tells Different Story

Sat, 2017-06-24 12:43

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Because humans have a habit of compartmentalizing and organizing information, it is nearly impossible to not judge a stranger upon meeting. Regardless if an assessment is based on body language, the individual’s profession or even the way they dress, it is safe to say preconceived thoughts and beliefs are formed. Though the tendency to judge is normal, it can be detrimental in some ways — and that’s exactly what the following experiment proves.

For the project, six photographers were told to photograph the same man. Each was told a different backstory about the individual, however. One photographer was told the man is a fisherman. Another was informed that he is a self-made millionaire. And, someone else was told he was an ex-convict. In reality, he is none of those things. However, the artists didn’t know that and captured images that appear to be of different individuals.

The results of how the man was portrayed by each photograph is mind-blowing. Watch the video below for yourself:

As EducateInspireChange relays, “A photograph can be such an intimate representation of who we are. It also says a lot about the photographer too.” The experiment sheds light on people’s’ tendency to judge, or at least portray someone’s character based upon previously obtained information and first impressions. Hopefully, the video inspires people to be more conscious of the way they perceive themselves and others.

Elon Musk Funds Project To Educate 260 Million Children In Africa

Sat, 2017-06-24 12:33

By Jess Murray Truth Theory

Elon Musk is recognised for many revolutionary ideas, but his new investment could really move development forwards into a positive future for the young generation.

He is currently funding a project called the Global Learning XPRIZE, which is helping children in Tanzania to learn to read and write. With a $15 million investment, Musk is hoping to progress the teaching of skills that are considered basic in many parts of the developed world, such as reading, writing and arithmetic, to around 260 million children who would otherwise not be able to access these skills throughout their life.

According to recent reports, the humanitarian project is planning on running throughout 150 villages across Tanzania, where each one will be given Pixel C tablets, which have been provided by Google. This software has been specially designed by a variety of teams for the XPrize competition, and aims to aid children between the ages of seven to ten in their formal education.

X-PRIZE have chosen 11 semi-finalist software creators from 198 entrants back in 2014. The semi-finalists are currently developing their unique software in the hope of winning the overall competition in September, where five finalists will be chosen and awarded with a sum of $1 million, before their software is taken to be tested in Tanzania.

Further to this, a period of 18 months of software testing in Tanzania will commence, and whichever educational tools see the most improvement in the children studying, compared to a control group, will then win $10 million.

The children taking part in the live testing of the revolutionary software have never received any teaching before, and all live very far from any schools, meaning that formal education would otherwise have been impossible for them.

6 Reasons Why Sarcasm Is a Real Superpower

Sat, 2017-06-24 12:21

Via Learning Mind

Sarcasm is a popular form of satire in today’s culture, and we practically live off it.

But what if I told you that there are some key reasons that sarcasm can be one of the greatest superpowers we humans possess? Read on to learn why.

1. You can tell when others are lying

You’re constantly on the ball and paying attention, so when someone tries to pull the wool over your eyes, you are the first to call them out on their lies. No one can get past you, and you definitely won’t let them.

2. You’ve got a much thicker skin

Your sharp wit and clever words make it easy to brush off another’s criticism. You also know exactly what to say to make them tick, and leave you alone. Even when someone does upset you, you have the best self-defence skills, so they definitely won’t know.

3. You can read between the lines like a pro

When someone is trying to hide something, you’re the first one who sees it. You can read people’s body language like a second language, and you know what’s what. When it comes to situations that require a sharp eye, you’re there to figure out exactly what is going on.

4. Naming the elephant in the room is your best skill

Everyone’s thinking the same thing, but you’re the only one who’s brave enough to say it. You can point out exactly what’s not being said, and keep everyone honest. People will be grateful for this in the future, so it’s a valuable skill to have.

5. You can argue better than most lawyers

No one can argue better than those with a sarcastic tongue. You know exactly how to cut to the root of the problem and explain to others what they’ve done to upset you. Arguing with a sarcastic person is not something to take lightly.

6. You are spot on in assessing people’s weaknesses

This can be both a positive and a negative. You know exactly what will get to people, but you can also support friends and family in their weaknesses. You can be more supportive than others who aren’t as keen to notice the weaknesses in others because you know exactly what the problem is without having to be told.

So carry on with your sarcasm and keep practicing your superpower because it is one of the best weapons you have.

Photographer Went To Siberia To Document The Illegal Mammoth Tusk Hunt, And This Is What He Saw

Fri, 2017-06-23 14:26

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Little do people know that in the remote region of Siberia in Russia, a secret economic boom is taking place. Intrigued and hoping to learn more, Radio Free Europe photographer Amos Chapple visited the region in 2016 and entered the world of illegal mining for tusks and the remains of long-extinct wooly mammoths. Reportedly, Russian men participate in the illegal activity to sell the remains on the black market where they are guaranteed to receive a big payday.  Chapple’s investigation reveals a compelling cycle of desperation, hard work and environmental consequence, as Bored Panda reports.

Woolly mammoths are thought to have lived in Siberia around 400,000 years ago. Arctic relatives to the modern elephant, woolly mammoths were submerged under permafrost and many remain encased in ice beneath the ground. To mine for the tusks, the men have to blast the thick, icy mud with water pumped from nearby rivers. Not only is the task arduous and dangerous, it is illegal. However, because mammoth tusks sells for about $35k when sold to Chinese buyers, it’s deemed a worthwhile risk by some — especially in some Russian cities, where the average monthly wage is under $500.

In the following photo series, the harsh reality of illegally mining mammoth tusks is revealed. The men constantly go to great lengths to acquire the remains and often battle hoards of mosquitos, live in fear of detection by the police, and exert great effort to brave rugged terrain. To remain motivated, they guzzle quarts of vodka and cheap beer and as a result, fights oftentimes break out.

The most horrific part of the ordeal, however, is the environmental toll resulting from the illegal industry. Run-off water from the frozen Earth they douse returns to rivers, where it pollutes serene streams and raises silt levels dramatically.

The photo series is accompanied by Chapple’s own commentary as written in his RFE article.

“With the sale of elephant tusks under close scrutiny, “ethical ivory” from the extinct woolly mammoth is now feeding much of China’s hunger for tusks. Every summer, bands of tusk hunters head into the Russian wilderness in the hopes of striking it rich. On condition I not reveal names or exact locations, I gained access to one site where teams of men are using illegal new methods in the hunt for what remains of Siberia’s lost giants”, wrote photographer Amos Chapple

“Four hours by speedboat from the nearest village…” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“…is a bend in the river riddled with mammoth remains.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“A paleontologist I spoke to said this site was likely once a swamp or bog which drowned prehistoric beasts.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“The tuskers use water pumps designed for firefighting (Tohatsu are the preferred brand) to suck water out of the river..” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“…and blast it into the landscape.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“Some tuskers carve long, deep tunnels (which are terrifying – the walls are as soft as garden soil).” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“Others use the cutting power of the hoses to carve huge underground caverns.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“And some gouge channels straight through the topsoil.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“In the hope of finding one of these – a perfectly preserved mammoth tusk, worth around $520 per kilogram.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“A little background: Siberia’s Yakutia region sits on a foundation of permafrost – permanently frozen soil which lies a few feet below the surface.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“In warm soil, bones would rot away within a decade. But tusks and bones like this mammoth hip can survive tens of thousands of years once locked into the permafrost, making Yakutia a mammoth mecca.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“This 65-kilogram tusk, photographed a few minutes after it was plucked from the permafrost, was sold for $34,000. The two men who found it unearthed three more in just over a week, including one weighing 72 kilograms.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“The lucky tuskers flashing a “cash” gesture. They likely earned around $100,000 in eight days.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“That kind of money in a region where the average salary is around $500 a month, doesn’t always buy a happy ending. This memorial is for two young tuskers who made more than $100k, partied hard, then allegedly returned up the river drunk. They flipped their boat and drowned.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“In the tuskers’ hometown, elusive “agents” pay cash for fresh tusks. These plastic-wrapped tusks are on a flight to the city of Yakutsk, en route to China. This haul was covered with a tarpaulin, when I looked under it the air stewardess yelled at me, then marched down the aisle and slapped my camera out of my hand right after I took this photo.”(Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“But it’s not just mammoths that the men uncover. This skull belongs to a bison which which once roamed Siberia’s plains.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“And this skull, helping to prop up a kettle, is from a woolly rhinoceros.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“Another rhino skull, feeling the sun on its snout for the first time in at least 11,000 years. The man who found it says that “when you find a skull, the horn is usually 15 or 20 meters away.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“This 2.4-kilogram rhino horn was sold to an agent for $14,000. It will probably end up in Vietnam, be ground into powder and marketed as medicine.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“The damp horn squelches like driftwood and smells like a dirty dog. The “cancer curing” rhino horn will be worth more than its weight in gold once it reaches Vietnam.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“The life: Most men here will spend the entire summer away from home and family.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“This tusker penned letters to his wife that he passed on to other men headed back to the town, this is a letter from his wife – the first news he’d had from her in a week.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“This joint of reindeer is a rare treat. Most meals are canned beef and noodles. Two of the tuskers told me they eat dog “when we have to… The flavour is like bacon.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

“Mosquitoes are a near constant plague. Only the coldest mornings offer an hour or two of relief.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

On warm days, some of the men wear clothes more suited to beekeeping than hard labour.” (Image credits: Amos Chapple)

Stephen Hawking Is Developing A Spacecraft Capable Of Reaching ‘Second Earth’ In 20 Years

Fri, 2017-06-23 14:01

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Not long ago, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking announced that humans need to leave Earth within 100 years or prepare for the worst due to the effects of war, global warming and overpopulation. Now, it has been revealed that the professor is working on a spacecraft capable of traveling at a fifth of the speed of light. As The Independent reports, that means the ship could potentially reach the nearest star and send back images of a suspected “Second Earth” within 25 years.

In the past, Hawking explained that more than likely, Earth has not been contacted by an advanced civilization from another part of the universe because every time “intelligent” life evolves, it somehow annihilates itself. His fear is that if humans do not leave planet Earth, everything the humans species has become will be eradicated. Hawking also believes humans must leave Earth because the planet is too small for the growing population and is being drained “at an alarming rate.”

The spacecraft Hawking is working on developing is called a Star Chip, and would be just a few centimeters in size with a light sail weighing little more than a couple of grams. An array of lasers would power the ship and drive a tiny probe “on a beam of light” that travels about 100 million miles per hour. Said Hawking, “Such a system could reach Mars in less than an hour, reach Pluto in days, pass Voyager [the space probe launched in 1977] in under a week, and reach Alpha Centauri in just over 20 years.”

“Once there, the nano craft could image any planets discovered in the system, test for magnetic fields and organic molecules, and send the data back to Earth in another laser beam,” he added. “This tiny signal would be received by the same array of dishes that were used to transit the launch beam, and return is estimated to take about four light years.”

The scientist added that the Star Chips’ trajectories may include a fly-by of Proxima b, the Earth-size planet in the habitable zone of Alpha Centauri. Named Breakthrough Star Shot, the project is “a real opportunity for man to make early forays into outer space, with a view to probing and weighing the possibilities of colonisation,” said Hawking.

It is important to note that Hawking is not working on a spacecraft capable of transporting humans to other planets. He admitted: “Of course, this would not be human interstellar travel, even if it could be scaled up to a crewed vessel. It would be unable to stop.” Hawking continued, “But it would be the moment when human culture goes interstellar, when we finally reach out into the galaxy. And if Breakthrough Star Shot should send back images of a habitable planet orbiting our closest neighbour, it could be of immense importance to the future of humanity.”

When the craft is complete, spectators in the upcoming decades can expect “slightly distorted” imaged due to the effects of special relativity. Regardless, they will be happily received as it will be the first time any spacecraft has traveled enough to see such effects.

Commenting on the development, Hawking stated: “We are standing at the threshold of a new era.  Human colonisation on other planets is no longer science fiction. It can be science fact.”

Hawking is interested in finding a planet similar to Earth because the moon and Mars are not suitable in his opinion. The Cambridge University scholar said the moon is too small, has no atmosphere and lacks a magnetic field to deflect solar radiation. Additionally, Mars lost its magnetic field and much of its atmosphere.

Nonetheless, he believes humans should create a base on the moon by 2020 and send people to Mars by 2025 — a plan NASA is already enacting. Within the next 200 to 500 years, Hawking said, interstellar travel for humans might be accomplished.

Hawking is confident his and others’ plans will come to fruition, as the human spirit is enduring, in his eyes. Extolling the virtues of the human attribution, he said “With this, we can roam anywhere in space and time. And I do.”

He added, “We can witness nature’s most exotic phenomena while in a car, snoozing in bed, or pretending to listen to someone boring at a party. And I do.”

70 Illegally Smuggled North Korea Photos They Don’t Want You To See

Fri, 2017-06-23 13:54

Via True Activist

Last year, photographer Michael Huniewicz traveled to North Korea from China to explore the secretive country, as well capture in raw form the state of its poverty-ridden society under the dictatorship of Kim Jong-un.

The stunning photos, which were shared with the Daily Mail, were “very stressful” to smuggle out, according to Huniewicz. Many times, his guides – which are mandatory for travel – warned him “You took too many photos. Too many.”  They were hinting at his likely detainment, as most of the shots were illegal to capture.

Regardless, he felt the risk was worth it, as the images give “a more candid look into the most mysterious country on the planet.”

These photos are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, as they contrast greatly from the polished photographs peddled by the state-run news agency.

Mr. Huniewicz was careful to evade his minder’s watchful eye when he took these photographs. Some feature workers in the fields and others expose the squeaky-clean capital, Pyongyang.

View the gallery of  exclusive photos he managed to smuggle out of the country:

In this photo, North Korean streetwalkers go about in what seems to be their ordinary everyday life—a mother carrying her child and people crossing the street, among other things. Nevertheless, North Korea remains to be one of the most repressive countries since all basic freedom rights have been restricted under the Kim family, Human Rights Watch reported.  In addition to that, several kinds of abuse, such as enslavement, torture, imprisonment, forced abortions, and other sexual violence were “without parallel” in this country.

This is one of the seemingly normal photos taken by Michal Huniewicz before smuggling a series out of the country. There’s nothing really unusual to these North Koreans traveling on a bus. But the North Korean government is considered notoriously secretive, Business Insider mentioned, so even the most ordinary of photos like this bring in a lot of buzz. Photography is allowed and encouraged but only in “designated places that are well-maintained…everything else is not allowed”.

Locals wait for a train to pass, providing Michal moments to snap this image of life in North Korea’s countryside. Amateur Photographer reported that photography is actively encouraged, but of course, under highly controlled conditions, and photos taken from Dandong Pyongyang train (such as the one above) are not allowed. In their interview with Michal, he said it was very much like a “stealth video game”; he could only take a picture when the uniformed officers were not around.

A waitress works in a restaurant while 24/7 propaganda plays on the television. The seven people including Michal did not get to interact with the locals at all, Bored Panda stated. And most of the waitresses seemed slightly terrified of them. Michal adds that locals pretended they could not see them or acted as if merely talking to them was a threat, which maybe it was. Taking out his DSLR camera was also too risky in some places, where locals reported sightings to the police. Street cleaners sweep pavements for dust under the keen eye of a soldier in one of the parks in the capital city, Pyongyang. Sightings of residents cleaning on squeaky clean areas were completely bizarre for the tourists considering them as “staged”, The Sun reported. Photos such as the one above could have been deleted since a photo of a soldier’s back area is prohibited. Michal told The Sun that while he did manage to smuggle the photos out of the country, it was still pretty stressful. In the photo, there are North Koreans waiting to sell human waste to be used as fertilizer. Michal told Mirror.co.uk that they were taken to nice places where “everything was very stage-managed”. This was one of the first things they saw—a part of a weird-looking slum, which looked like an “Oriental version of the communist-era Eastern Europe” where there are lots of socialist architecture of North Korean leaders. Aside from controlled photographs, they were also not allowed to leave their hotel rooms at night. According to the photographer, the scene was staged, as there were no other trains that day. Michael said that he may not be able to prove whether or not the scenes were fake, but many of the scenes they saw looked “highly unnatural”, Amateur Photograph reported. The citizens appeared to be playing out at Pyongyang’s main station, with elegant passengers “happily” milling around despite having no other trains for departure. There is even a waiting room that is regally-decorated but is said to be typically empty. North Korean workers are carrying some sort of equipment on a main road in this photo. Michal said he was prepared to see poverty but what he did not expect was the “mental strain” people had to be under, Mirror.co.uk reported. In addition, the lack of technological resources and access to these items kept them oppressed and suppressed under the Kim family’s regime. Photos that show the oppressive nature of the North Korean government are supposed to be deleted at the border.

This custom declaration form reveals that it is illegal to bring laptops into the country. And, of course, Korean films, pornography, and even guide books.

Michal said that you have to fill in several of these (above photos) before you can enter the border, Art Sheep recounted. You must have your North Korean visa issued, approved by the Party and of course, a North Korean customs declaration form. They were told that if they bring any porn into the country and they found out about it, they would show it to their travel companions to embarrass them, and then confiscate the device. One of the few entry points for foreign tourists was deserted when Michal was present. Some sources also say it is the only entry point for foreigners. Euronews reported that the North Koreans in the station were “immaculately-clad” and appear to be rushed about their business as the foreigners’ carriage pulls in. Huniewicz told Euronews, “To me, North Korea was actually worse than what they show on TV”.

A more realistic side to the capital’s city life? Yes, that is a man answering the call of nature right by the concrete road. Given that the North Korean government wants the foreigners to take pictures of the grandeur side of the country, this is definitely on top of the what-should-be-deleted-photos criteria. Bored Panda reported that North Koreans can only travel within the country when they receive a permit. But they are not permitted to do this (as denoted by the photo above) for sure.

Risky: A photo of North Korean soldiers, deep in conversation. As aforementioned in one of the previous slides, you can only take a photo of a soldier from the front and profile or the designated ones. However, these are even unsuspecting officers, who if aware, can delete this photo themselves.  Photos from military installations are also not allowed, as Amateur Photographer reported, nor from inside the Victorious War Museum, since as they have said, “the war isn’t over yet”. A battered white pickup truck carries North Korean soldiers along a dusty road. Again, random photos of soldiers are strictly prohibited and this unsightly view of North Korea’s countryside is entirely illegal. CNN described that one of the biggest complaints among tourists visiting North Korea is their “inability to get out and explore”. Every tour is carefully choreographed and only endorsed by the state-run Korea International Travel Company. No wonder you only find seemingly ordinary photos such as this.

In rural parts of North Korea, miles of uninterrupted green fields can be seen. Farming remains key for survival. Aside from evidence of abject poverty, many people in the country still lack access to better technology and enough resources to pursue progress and development.

According to Euronews, the unfinished roads, cycling peasants in grinding poverty and toiling rural lifestyle clash with the image of a country striving to present a prospering superpower who can afford to invest heavily in a nuclear weapons program.

Gloomy gray architecture…

The state-sponsored tour guides are virtually watching the photographer’s every move. Unpleasant photos such as the brutalist design of these structures are, once again, strictly prohibited. But amidst the appearances of such buildings (which are totally not prevalent in the country) North Korea plunges into darkness at night showing way opposite to South Korea and China.  Nonetheless, North Korea is again dominated by 50s-looking infrastructures, Art Sheep reported.

The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge remains to be one of the last bright lights for tourists entering North Korea from Southeastern China. This is also known as the Yalu River Bridge named in 1990, China Highlights reported. It is one of the few entries into North Korea especially for foreign tourists. It was bombed during the Korean War but was repaired.

“I had 15 seconds to take this picture. This shop is for the locals only, and I was kicked out of it by my guide soon after taking this photo, but he didn’t’ see me taking it,” Michal told Bored Panda.

This only shows a half-empty supermarket denoting the economic struggle of the North Korean locals. Given the secrecy of North Korea and the international sanctions imposed on the country, the locals are suffering most of the terrible consequences. The economic history of North Korea portrays slowdown, inactivity, and crises with intermittent phases of sluggish economic growth, Investopedia reported.

Guards in watchtowers are positioned to prevent anyone from going astray. North Korean guard posts dot the hillsides in seemingly every direction, QSL.net stated. If you are caught escaping by North Korean soldiers, you would end up in a military confinement for a few months or years; for important defectors, death awaits… Many have already tried escaping because of poverty—hills barren of trees are good evidence—since the regime’s priority is making Korea a defense-centered economy.

People ride bicycles and use carriages, rather than driving cars and trucks. The laidback landscapes in North Korea show several inconsistencies as to whether North Korea is actually prospering or not. Bicycles and carriages are vital for most North Koreans who do not own cars or motorcycles. In another aspect, CNBC reported that it has been illegal (again) for women to ride bicycles in North Korea. Kim Jung Un somehow reinstated his father’s absurd law after he lifted the ban last year.

“We were intercepted by our guides, who we could not leave during the entire stay, and who’d tell us when to sleep and when to wake up.” When you’re traveling in North Korea, do not expect to be able to travel independently and be prepared to follow certain rules, The Telegraph said. Moreover, the guides need to be specially appointed by the country’s Ministry of Tourism and also need to be associated with one of the three travel services based in the capital, Pyongyang. Travelers are bound to follow the strictest of rules within the country, which include not walking around unaccompanied.

“You are only allowed to photograph these statues if both bodies are featured in their entirety. There was an endless stream of North Koreans bringing flowers and bowing to them.” Cutting off an infamous statue (such as Kim Jong Un) in a photo is downright prohibited and if this act is not believably staged, you would think they are into some kind of anthropolatry (the worship of a human being). People who criticize or do not show proper “respect” for the regime are often punished with stiff penalties, Wikipedia described. In addition, this cult-like personality began after Kim Il-Sung took power and became prevalent after his death. If you think the strict travel rules and limitations only apply to foreign visitors, then you’re wrong. North Koreans can only travel within the country when they receive a permit. Michal felt the importance of one’s rights to travel whenever and wherever he wants to, The Telegraph reported. In addition, North Koreans can only travel big distances by train or bus once they get a permit since the maintenance on most roads is very poor.

In this photo, these young girls play next to crops planted near a dilapidated pink tower block. So, you might wonder what could be illegal about this innocent photo. According to Daily Mail, tourists should not take photos from the train and should not take photos of forbidden subjects, including children working in the fields. This is what the streets of the capital city, Pyongyang, look like. This is one of the photos that North Korea wants the world to see. An interview from another defector who was able to smuggle photos from North Korea told Daily Mail that Pyongyang is the showcase of North Korea, so building exteriors are carefully maintained but when you take a look inside, the truth becomes apparent. Poverty in North Korea continues to be widespread.

Liberty In North Korea reported that the regime forces the citizens to participate in the maintenance of personality cults around the Kim leaders that have ruled the country for over 60 years. State media provides a constant series of myths about the Kims and lauds the sacrifices they supposedly make for the people. Most of the labor hours have to be spent idolizing the leaders as well.

These statues are of the Kim’s. Taking photographs in North Korea remains a difficult and risky task, with the government officials closely watching for any straying foreign tourists. According to Radio Free Asia, it is possible to argue that North Korea has the strictest media censorship system in the world. North Korean media outlets are an important branch of the government propaganda bureaucracy. In addition, the country’s primary goal is to indoctrinate and control common people, to explain to them what they should think about the world. Its media exists to distort the picture of the world according to the ever-changing demands of the ruling elite.

This photo shows North Korea’s taxis and taxi drivers. North Korea is constrained by economic problems and government restrictions, as Wikipedia described. The near absence of private automobiles had been a result of fuel constraints, making road transportation a secondary necessity. Also, as aforementioned before, poor road construction and maintenance discourages most of the taxi and bus drivers. Most of the roads in North Korea are paved with dirt, crushed stone, gravel, and/or are poorly maintained.

A group of women is pictured sweeping an already spotless pathway in North Korea’s capital city. Street cleaners are found on the squeaky clean streets of the capital city where foreigners or tourists often visit. You might ask the same question, “What the heck are they cleaning?” Michal even told Next Shark, “The country is depressing. We only saw a handful of people smiling or expressing anything other than obedience. They just walk in silence from one place to another, and avoid foreigners like ourselves.”

This photo shows North Korean citizens commuting to school and work. One of the restrictions in photography in North Korea is taking pictures of unnecessary or unpleasant sightings, including a photo of a subway train. Plus, the people here might not be part of the “staged” incidences they often perform when tourists arrive. In terms of transportation problems, North Korea has a ratio of one car for every thousand people and has a severe shortage of petroleum, Atlas Obscura reported.

This is one of the rural parts of North Korea. The second largest city, Hamhung, is made of hectares of underdeveloped land, in opposite to Pyongyang. Even the best roads can still be described as rough, potholed, and unmaintained. People living in the rural areas experience the greatest of the economic repercussions among all. They can be seen as tirelessly carrying sacks up and down unpaved roads without the right modes of transportation. Underage workers are even forced to work due to poverty.

Korea (left) contrasts China (right)

This stark difference between North Korea and China is a good way to differentiate how both countries differ in terms of governance. The Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge, however, links Dandong, China with North Korea. According to Wikipedia’s North Korea: Trade and Contact, its border with China has been described as North Korea’s “lifeline to the outside world”. Violators put themselves at considerable danger to acquire imported products such as phones.

Sightseeing on the Yalu :  Tour groups occasionally come at the riverbank in Dandong city, China. As aforementioned, North Korea and China is greatly divided by the Yalu River. They can have a peek across the river via coin-operated telescopes and tourist boats (above) on the country’s landscape and its people’s livelihood, Sputnik News reported. Also, Michael told Next Shark that their male guide was more of an “authoritative enforcer” who appeared less distant to the travelers. He only spoke in short messages.

A statue of Mao Zedong stands in Dandong, China

The personality cult is not actually isolated in North Korea. The place where you can see North Korea from afar had somehow acculturated such attitude towards their past ruler. The photo above is a statue of Mao Zedong, a revolutionary communist, at Dandong city, China. This statue somehow now stands helplessly witnessing the transition of the city to capitalism, Michal stated in his blog. This statue still accumulates different reactions around the country since it was also the era of the world’s biggest wealth gaps and rampant corruption, Financial Times stated.

A landscape of North Korea

In actuality, particular landscapes from North Korea can be seen at Dandong, China without having the need to go through the strict processes. Most Chinese sightseers take the time to see the landscapes of the secretive state and the daily activities of people there. Sightseeing slacks during the winter season but recently, local tourism agencies say that they have been receiving few tourists lately leaving them to wonder if it has anything to do with the new round of sanctions the United Nations slapped on North Korea, CNN reported.

A landscape of North Korea

This photo would remind you of a 50s-designed set-up on the North Korean side of the river. The underdevelopment is prevalent on the outskirts of Pyongyang and the rest of the cities where foreign tourists do not go to or are not allowed to take pictures.  According to BBC News, very few people own cars, most people live in the remotest areas, and most villagers even have to tend allotments together and share the produce to overcome their poverty.

Blocks of flats in the progressive China

In comparison to North Korea’s brutalist-designed buildings, China shows off a neat, modern-day design of apartments in their country. For centuries, China stood as a leading civilization outpacing the rest of the world especially in the arts and sciences, Index Mundi reported. In 2010, reforms began with the phasing out of the collectivized agriculture and expanded to include the gradual liberalization of prices, increased autonomy for state enterprise, growth of the private sector, etc.

Elderly Chinese dance

Aside from the geographic proximity, the significance of China-North Korean relationship can be better appreciated when you look at the angle of China’s relationship with the Asia-Pacific powers, The Diplomat assessed. The two countries seemingly agree at several aspects including their absolute avoidance to pluralism and individualism. The elderly Chinese dance together in unison to avoid any displays of such aspects. China maintains an embassy in the North Korean capital and a consulate in Chongjin while North Korea’s embassy is located in Beijing Chaoyang District.

The Yalu River Broken Bridge

During the Korean War in 1950, the American aircraft bombed the bridges of the Yalu River. It repeatedly attacked the bridges in an attempt to cut off Chinese supplies to the North Koreans, Wikipedia described. The 1911 bridge was left destroyed, now termed as the Broken Bridge, which are four spans from the North Korean shore. On the other hand, the other bridge was rebuilt, the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, making it one of few entry points of foreign tourists from China.

This is a photo of flats in North Korea. Firstly, this photo is taken from a train qualifying this as an illegal photo. Michal wrote in his blog, M1key.net, “It felt like landing on another planet, and looked like an Oriental version of Eastern Europe before 1989.” It is actually a city in Sinuiju, the city that faces Dandong, China across the international border of the Yalu River. Since this is the first place for tourists to see, it is a little bit developed than the rural areas of the country.

From this distance, you would notice three people standing tall. In actuality, they are supersized portraits of Kim Il-Sung, the Eternal President of North Korea; his son, Kim Jong-il, the Eternal Secretary of North Korea; and Kim Jong-Suk, the wife of the former. Michal asked the tour guide about the wife of the latter and the response was, “We don’t talk about her.” There’s a huge chance for an awkward silence for sure, yikes!

Bicycle riders wait at the railway crossing.

According to North Korea News, bikes are sometimes illegal and sometimes encouraged. It is suspected that during the 1970s and 1980s, the North Korean authorities kept Pyongyang from hordes of cyclists, since it was the city most likely to be seen by foreign visitors. But this ban did not apply outside Pyongyang, so people could smoothly cruise on their bicycles more or less undisturbed. However, the situation changed when the Pyongjin Company had a joint venture with a Chinese firm, which began to produce bicycles.

Signage: “(The Korean Workers’) Party is never going to forget the comrades of Rakwon (city)”.

Encyclopaedia Britannica states that the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP) is a North Korean political party founded in 1946 in the early years of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)—the state’s primary agency of political power. The KWP controls the electoral system and draws up lists of approved candidates. The KWP continued to hold authority over mass union of various civilian groups such as farmers, youths, and workers in the country.

This building sports the former leaders’ portraits. According to The Guardian, North Korea is a country living under the watchful eyes of its great leaders—millions of portraits of them. The photo above is only a few of many portraits of the deceased former heads of the state that are mandated in every home, office, school, and public place. This is said to be a constant reminder of the Kim dynasty and their influence over the country since the DPRK was first established in 1948. Je Son-Lee, a defector who fled the country in 2011, explained that the two men are treated like gods. He said, “That’s why we have to have their portraits, in order to be with them all the time.”

An unsuspecting man stands at the railway in this photo. Foreign tourists and photographers have recently been very curious about what could possibly happen inside the famously secretive North Korea. Via stealth strategies, they captured photos such as the one above (taken from inside the train—prohibited) that Kim Jong-Un’s government would not wish the world to see. Customs officers can check a passenger’s laptop, mobile devices, and digital cameras for prohibited photos, IB Times reported. There are a number of rules that tourists must follow but some just take the risks for several reasons.

These photos show the countryside of North Korea. North Korea is prevalent with severe poverty, absolute censorship, and worst human rights violations in the world, Mic News stated. Their secrecy of the locals’ daily lives amplified such speculations. There are minimal public transportation, power outages, and scarcity of food and safety standards, all of which continue to hearten outsiders to inform the people outside the borders to take action. North Korea continues to show his superiority among the world powers. However, Kim Jong-Un tries to hide any evidence of the nation’s low standards of living.

This is another large building in North Korea. Dictators seem to embody their range of emotion through architecture, Business Insider explained. The towering concrete buildings shroud the observers in their shadow, which is intensified for a country that keeps so much under wraps. A good evidence of the comedy and horror behind stories of such big-but-empty buildings is that North Korean builders are doled out with methamphetamine to “speed up” the progress of construction.

This photo shows Pyongyang by day, looking bleak. More and more tourists are teased by the secrecy of North Korea’s realities. Foreign visitors are no longer dazzled or deceived by “staged” events happening around them. They continue to look for a more real subject and not statues or portraits of the leaders. The city screams in misery for most of its buildings are empty while people outside the borders of the capital city are struggling with poverty, the Daily Mail reported.

The Yanggakdo Hotel in Pyongyang is harboring a secret—the 5th floor is missing from the elevator panel, The Business Insider reported. While it can be accessed by stairs, it is off-limits to hotel guests. In summary, the 5th floor is a concrete bunker with locked steel doors and unsettling propaganda such as posters saying “Our General is the best”,  “We miss our Father, the General”, “Military first politics”, and propagandas upholding Japanese as invaders and killers and Americans as bombers.

This is a famous landmark in the capital city. BBC reported that every night, North Korea’s news bulletin begins with a song about the mythical qualities of the country’s leaders. This is already downright absurd to start with. The state media will then show a constant stream of stories about their leader’s economic guidance and benevolent care. Reminding the townspeople of the former leaders’ existence becomes transcendent due to their apparent images on billboards, buildings, television reports, and every office wall.

In the photo, women and men flock to a landmark in the capital city. In terms of gender equality, North Korea is highly patriarchal, The Guardian stated. If women visit other houses on January 1st, or if their husbands are seen in the kitchen, then these women are somehow degraded. Women, and not men, are expected to take care of everything that happens within the house.

One of the insights of a North Korean traveler in Quora stated that the main emphasis of the schools in the country is indoctrination to the regime. Lessons about the life and the greatness of the Kim family are a regular part of a school day. Rooms dedicated to the Kim family are even part of the curriculum. Most lessons are filled with ideological messages and travel lessons in English have a theme about traveling to Pyongyang. Literacy is high but the skill sets are ill-suited for the 21st century.

North Korea does not really sound like a store you would want to buy from but one of its very successful exports had been its art, BBC reported. North Korea would want to carry out your artistic commissions—a tapestry, a mural, a “jewel painting” or something like a giant bronze statue of a dictator or liberator close to your heart. The Mansudae Art Studio, in the heart of Pyongyang, just produced large embroidery for the Benetton fashion family but it is in Africa that Mansudae Overseas Projects (MOP) had found the strongest craving for its work.

It has been almost 5 years since Kim Jong-Un became the leader of North Korea, being the 3rd generation in the Kim dynasty. Kim Jong-Il, the former leader, was chosen for his master of propaganda but was considered to be the worst of them. On the other hand, the current government’s propaganda revealed government-run websites revealing only 28.  The government websites make up a majority portion of what North Korean citizens can only browse.

A big portion of Pyongyang operates an “alternative suspension of electricity supply” system. It is something like a rotating blackout—when buildings on one side of the street lose power, the other side of the street gets power. If the electricity supply is suspended, however, no heat is available. People who manage to obtain chicken or duck feathers use them to make quilts. They also don layers of underwear and shirts to retain body heat, The Guardian explained.

Western tourists are not allowed to talk to their guides too much about America; they are only allowed to stay in one hotel in Pyongyang; and they are cautioned too often of all the restrictions in taking photos of landmarks and things in the country. They are highly strict towards American tourists, which they can detain for whatever reason and the U.S. would have no diplomatic way to get them out.

According to Arch Daily, for North Korea, architecture is propaganda. It adds that the country continues to evolve and become refined for a totalitarian control of its population. You might wonder if they actually buy into the regime. Well, they actually do. Women even cry over the death of their leader, men and women have their own careers, and do other daily activities. This is a carefully constructed regime which has an unparalleled understanding of how urbanism and architecture can influence and control people.

This bridge connects Dandong, China and Sinuiju, North Korea. According to News.com.au, the bridge is a “vital lifeline for Pyongyang” and a “strategic purpose for a more powerful ally”. This is the Sino-Korean (China-North Korea) Friendship Bridge which crosses the Yalu River. It supplies around 90% of North Korea’s trade. However, experts reveal that Beijing’s reason to keep the relationship afloat is that it preferred to have an “embarrassing” Communist neighbor than to be aligned with the West.

This is another baroque-styled infrastructure in North Korea. People are seen to play sport on an unlikely place to play, linking to possibilities of a staged performance for the foreign tourists passing by. This is actually one of the original governmental ministry buildings, which takes prominent seats within the cityscape, Arch Daily added. And again, as the figure on top of the building suggests, it shows a clear sign of propaganda from the regime about their nationalist ideologies and practices.

Both leaders are seen as demi-gods, as Earth Nutshell described. Portraits of the deceased leaders are required in every house and public place around the country. Putting propaganda in magnanimous infrastructures is one prevalent method of the government to display their power and aggravate their control over the people. Music, literature, and art are other channels of propaganda that are released round the clock which have been very effective for decades.

These are tour guides at the reception area of the tourists’ hotel. Travelers should abide by the rules within the country, which include refraining from taking photos at certain locations and from walking around unaccompanied. Yes, going to North Korea is not your regular way of traveling. Your trips will circulate around statues and murals of the past and present leaders (over and over again), the large architectural structures (which are dominantly in one city only), and other areas that show North Korea as a prosperous country.

This shop is only open for the locals, qualifying this photo once again, as illegal. The store seems to look stuffed with goods but actually, if you put them like how stores place goods together on shelves in the West, this place would be half-empty. North Korea is actually desperate for food aid and other forms of economic assistance amidst the showmanship and threats of a nuclear war, US News reported.

In the photo, a tourist puts on a costume for a photo op with the statuette of a horse. Everything in North Korea must have an embedded political message; even its entertainment forms are state-sponsored, Korea Joongang Daily described. As the world already knows, North Korea is the stage and all its people are actors. Festivities are dedicated to their late leaders, people are directed as to what to say, how to stand, and even how to sit.

Like the ancient gods, the Eternal President of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, “expects” worship, Michal said in his blog. An endless flow of people place flowers at the foot of his tomb (especially with tourists around). People who go there without flowers can be arrested by the Communists for disobeying them. Everyone living in Pyongyang has to wear a red badge, which cannot be brought anywhere else. Michal adds, “Supposedly, they may give it to you if you are obedient and do not ask stupid questions.”

About 5.3 million children below the age of 14 in North Korea learn to love the brutal history of their country from its founder, Kim Il-Sung all the way to its ruler, Kim Jong-Un, Business Insider reported. Everything that they do is often in the pursuit of promoting the country’s political will. In summary of the reports, early-aged kids living outside the capital city are made to work on the farm, and child forced labor accounts for a large portion of the country’s economic output and those who do not comply can be sent to concentration camps as punishment.

This man reads an issue of The Pyongyang Times. As of 2015, North Korea sustained its spot as one of the most repressive media environments in the world, Freedom House surveyed. It said that the state-regulated national media produce propaganda ensuring absolute loyalty to Kim Jong-Un. Since present leader took position in December 2011, access to foreign and independent media is tightly restricted. Listening to illegal foreign programs and possessing rebellious publications are deliberated “crimes against the state” that carry serious punishments.

World’s Top Religious Leaders Unite To Send An Important Message [Video]

Fri, 2017-06-23 10:30

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Though many of the world’s religions promote peace, ironically, the majority of wars stem from difference in beliefs. Because of this, major religious leaders — including Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama and Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks — issued a joint appeal asking people to do one simple thing: make friends with others who maintain different religious views.

In a video recording, Ayatollah Sayyid Fadhel Al-Milani, one of the U.K.’s most senior Shia Muslim clerics, said: “Our advice is to make friends to followers of all religions.” The Dalai Lama added, “Personal contact, personal friendship, then we can exchange a deeper level of experience.”

All in all, 22 leaders from a spectrum of religious beliefs — Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism — participated in the video. Additionally, each contributed a personal statement geared toward the purpose of the project.

In the video, Pope Francis explained his long friendship with the Argentinian Rabbi Abraham Skorka, who also participated in the collaboration. Commenting on their mutual understanding, the Pope said: “My religious life became richer with his explanations, so much richer. And I guess the same happened for him.”

The Huffington Post reports that the  Elijah Interfaith Institute initiated the “Make Friends” campaign. In a press release, organizers stated that the project’s mission is to counter the notion that people view each other’s’ religions with distrust or distaste. Contributors seek to make it known that despite what mainstream media would promote, it is possible for people of different religions to get along with each other and not incite violence.

The Institute’s director, Rabbi Dr. Alon Goshen-Gottstein, commented that the project seeks to introduce a new theological perspective. “We cannot deny that in the books of many religions you can find texts that are not very open, even hostile, to people of other faiths,” he said in a statement. “Therefore, when the world’s most important leaders call for friendship, they are in fact affirming a particular way of practicing religion and rejecting another.”

Gardening More Meaningful Than Voting In A Rigged Political System

Thu, 2017-06-22 13:35

By Alex Pietrowski via Waking Times

The most effective change-makers in our society aren’t waiting around for a new president to make their lives better, they’re planting seeds, quite literally, and through the revolutionary act of gardening, they’re rebuilding their communities while growing their own independence.

Every four years when the big election comes around, millions of people put their passion for creating a better world into an increasingly corrupt and absurd political contest. What if that energy was instead invested in something worthwhile, something that directly and immediately improved life, community, and the world at large?

The simple act of growing our own food directly challenges the control matrix in many authentic ways, which is why some of the most forward-thinking and strongest-willed people are picking up shovels and defiantly starting gardens. It has become much more of a meaningful political statement than supporting political parties and candidates.

“Propaganda gardening, a combination of guerrilla gardening and political protest, is about developing self-sufficiency while making a simple, yet bold statement about the world we all share, and the rules we choose to live by.” [Source]

Take, for example, Ron Finley, the ‘Guerrilla Gardener’ from Los Angeles who inspires the world with no-nonsense truth about how the corporate food system enslaves us, while proving to us that the most effective weapon in this fight is fertile soil. He makes growing veggies cool again, as it should be, because food sovereignty is the very foundation of personal independence.

“I live in a food prison.. It’s all by design just like prisons are by designed. I just got tired of being an inmate. So I figured, let me change this paradigm, let me grown my own food. This is one thing I can do to escape this predestined life that I have unwillingly subscribed to.” – Ron Finley

Think about it. Creating your own food supply challenges the status quo in a number of important ways. Growing your own food:

  • Decreases dependence on a polluted corporate food system
  • Improves health and wellness by providing exercise and nutritious food, freeing us from dependence on a for-profit medical system
  • Undermines Monsanto and the agro-chemical industry that is polluting our world and killing bees
  • Highlights issues of political control by pitting homeowners and gardeners against government and ordinance makers
  • Builds and heals community by providing a place and activity worth coming together over
  • Works to repair the damage we are doing to the environment with our consumer lifestyles
  • Protects us against insecurity and food unrest
  • Facilitates a greater awakening by setting an example for others to follow

When united, awareness and action create the kind of changes that a rigid control system cannot tolerate, and when extraordinary people like Ron Finley take the lead, a meaningful movement can take hold. This is real action, it is very effective, and as it becomes more mainstream to set up gardens in your yard and on your block, we will witness the re-emergence of the kind of society we just cannot create by playing by the rules of a rigged system.

“I had sixty people putting in an urban garden while you all were marching. Now who do you think was more effective?” – Ron Finley

Here’s Ron in a recent interview with Marc Angelo of the Superhero Academy:

Just a few generations ago, gardening for sustenance was not the fringe activity that it has become in recent decades, because it was a basic daily act of survival. One that will rise again as a controlled economy and engineered economic collapse will make it imperative to join forces with your community and defend your personal sovereignty.

““Why don’t you churches get together instead of with your ‘my religion is better than yours’ bullshit, and get together and put in a healthy food market… isn’t that doing good business? If your people live longer, don’t you get more money?” – Ron Finley

What happens when you transform yourself by deepening your connection to nature? What happens when you then transform your community by bringing your neighbors together in the goal of providing something of immense value to all? What happens then when a nation of transformed communities sees their world without the boundaries of and limitations imposed on us by a corrupt system?

The four year cycle of presidential politics in the US is far more effective at stealing the constructive energy of motivated people than it is at bringing about meaningful change to our lives, communities and to the nation as a whole. Time to try something far more effective and rewarding. Let’s overgrow the system, and transform our health and communities in the process.

For a sign that this movement is spreading across the nation, check out this homegrown music video, ‘Gardening is Gangsta,’ by Mark Jankins and Sifu Paul Davis. “I don’t rely on new food stamps. Cuz’ every season got me harvesting some new plants.”

This Breatharian Couple Claims They’ve Barely Eaten In Years And Subsist On Prana

Thu, 2017-06-22 13:23

By Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

For most people, food is a no-brainer, a vital ingredient to thrive. For husband and wife Akahi Ricardo and Camila Castello, food is an unnecessary source of sustenance, as they believe humans can be nourished solely by the energy of the universe.

The couple, who has a five-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter, claim to survive on little else besides a piece of fruit or vegetable broth a few times per week. Their main source of fuel? The “universe’s energy.” They are what you would call “Breatharian.”

Though there is little scientific evidence supporting the lifestyle, Castello and Ricardo are adamant they thrive by eating little to nothing. Not only has their “food-free lifestyle” improved their health and emotional well-being, it has resulted in them spending less money on groceries so they can travel the world together.

Potential Alien Body Unearthed In Nazca, Peru. A Species Unlike Anything Found In The Fossil Record?

Wed, 2017-06-21 15:50

By Arjun Walia via Collective Evolution

The title begs the question, is this a primitive human with deformities or simply more evidence of extraterrestrials visiting Earth? It’s definitely time to move past the idea that some of these “UFOs,” which are commonly sighted and simultaneously tracked on radar, are part of an extraterrestrial conspiracy theory.

We now have scientists examining the physical evidence associated with this phenomenon, and hundreds of high ranking military/political personnel, as well as academics, testifying every single year urging the public to seriously consider the evidence available.

There is so much to be known about our world, and it’s unfortunate that, for a very long time, a small group of people and the handful of corporations they run have controlled the information we have access to. Rarely are people willing to go beyond, do their own research, examine multiple sources, and think for themselves. If one were to do so with the UFO/extraterrestrial topic, they would have a hard time refuting the evidence.

This is why, instead of simply discussing UFOs and their possible extraterrestrial origin, and all of the questions such a discussion brings up, we must examine other forms of evidence, or possible forms of evidence, that surface, without ridicule, but rather, critical examination.

“There are objects in our atmosphere which are technically miles in advance of anything we can deploy, that we have no means of stopping them coming here … [and] that there is a serious possibility that we are being visited and have been visited for many years by people from outer space, from other civilizations. That it behooves us, in case some of these people in the future or now should turn hostile, to find out who they are, where they come from, and what they want. This should be the subject of rigorous scientific investigation and not the subject of ‘rubishing’ by tabloid newspapers.”

– Lord Admiral Hill-Norton, Former Chief of Defence Staff, 5 Star Admiral of the Royal Navy, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee (source)

“Behind the scenes, high ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.”

– Former head of CIA Roscoe Hillenkoetter, 1960 (source)

The quote above is simply referring to UFOs, and with witness testimony, it’s an educated assumption to say the same for any potential physical or biological evidence of an actual being. Personally, I believe there is a great deal of evidence, just as there was for “UFOs” before they left the conspiracy realm. Remember, “condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance.”

Unearthing NAZCA

Gaia.com recently released information regarding the discovery of a mummified body. With three fingers, it looks unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Gaia has teamed up with a number of researchers and scientists to determine the origins of the specimen.

The story came to them from well-known and well-respected investigative journalist Jaime Maussan, who is calling this “one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century.”

Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, a professor of Computer Science and Biophysics at Saint-Petersburg Federal University of Informational Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, said, “we have a very important mission here in Peru. I came here because of this group of scientists, professionals, [and] journalists.” When they brought out the body and “pulled it out of the box, it was a stunned silence at first.”

What’s also very intriguing is the fact that it was discovered near the Nazca Lines, a series of huge ancient geoglyphs in Southern Peru’s Nazca Desert. The largest figures are up to 1,200 ft (370 m) long.

Author Graham Hancock describes his experience in one of his books, Fingerprints of the Gods:

Below us now there’s a pair of parallel lines, almost two miles long, arrow straight all the way to vanishing point. And there, off to the right, a series of abstract shapes on a scale so vast – and yet so precisely executed – that it seems inconceivable they could have been the work of men. The people around here say that they were not the work of men, but of demigods, the Viracochas, who also left their fingerprints elsewhere in the Andean region many thousands of years ago.

So far it seems that “initial examinations suggest the possibility of a species unlike anything found in the fossil record.”

Asia’s First-Ever Vertical Forest Will Produce 132 Pounds Of Oxygen Each Day

Wed, 2017-06-21 14:33

By  via True Activist

The two towers will clean the air of Nanjing, China, with 1,100 trees and 2,500 shrubs and plants.

When Stefano Boeri Architetti presented the idea of installing a vertical forest in Milan, people were beyond thrilled with the idea. Following the success of that introduction, the architecture firm now seeks to construct similar, but in Nanjing, China.

Inhabitat reports that two towers which overlook the Nanjing Pukou District will be completed by the end of 2018. Overflowing with 1,100 trees from 23 local species, as well as 2,500 cascading shrubs and plants, the installation will clean the city’s air by producing 132 pounds of oxygen every day. Additionally, passersby and tourists will be greeted with a breathtaking view.

The buildings, of course, will include more than just plants. The taller tower (656 feet) will hold offices, a museum, a green architecture school, and a rooftop club. And in the second tower (354 feet), a 247-room Hyatt hotel will be found, complete with a rooftop swimming pool. Shops, restaurants, and a conference hall will also be included in the second building in a podium that will rise 65 feet.

Because city air is notoriously dirty with pollution, those who stay in the hotel will have the unique opportunity to benefit from the oxygen produced by the plants as well as form a closer bond with nature.

According to Stefano Boeri Architetti’s press release, there will be approximately 600 tall trees and 500 medium-sized trees, in addition to the other foliage, that will help regenerate biodiversity in the area.

The project is being celebrated because it will be the first green tower in all of Asia. Investors are also satisfied with the fact that the conceptualized idea will further modernization efforts in the south of China’s Jiangsu province. Because of the potential economic boost the towers will provide, Nanjing Yang Zi State-owned Investment Group Company Limited is promoting the project.

Credit: Stefano Boeri Architetti

It may be the first-of-its-kind in China, but the architecture firm intends to build more green towers in Shanghai, Guizhou, Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, and Chongqing.

This Bonobo Starts Fires, Cooks His Own Food, AND Knows 3,000 English Words [Watch]

By  via True Activist

A bonobo ape has learned how to start fires, cook his own food, put them out, and much, much more…

Only recently was it affirmed that other species besides mankind have entered the stone age. This fascinating finding, initially reported by the BBC, has done much to dissuade the notion that humans are the noblest, and likely the most intelligent creatures on the planet.

If a group of macaques in Thailand have been living in the stone age for the past 50 years, what other evolutionary changes are taking place around the planet? If monkeys and apes are learning to use tools and cook their own food, is the next step for mankind an evolution of consciousness?

While no definite answers can yet be given, it seems clear that we as humans think we know about the bounds of intelligence and hierarchy on the planet is constantly changing. One need only to read about an impressive ape named Kanzi (below) to be persuaded of this theory.

Credit: Jeroen Kransen

The bonobo, which is a cousin to the chimpanzee, is thirty-five years old and was born in captivity. A resident of the Ape Cognition and Conservation Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa, Kanzi often partakes in various behavioral studies so researchers can improve their knowledge about great apes and improve the conservation projects which exist to protect them.

According to MaxAnimal, Kanzi has mastered a number of impressive skills, most notably being able to start a fire (and douse it when he’s done – safety first!) and cook his own food. Supplied with marshmallows, he will gather twigs, light the fire, and then roast them before savoring their gooey flesh. He’s also been seen roasting hamburgers on a pan over the fire.

Credit: MaxAnimal

Said Dr. Savage-Rumbaugh of ACCI:

“Kanzi makes fire because he wants to. He used to watch the film Quest For Fire when he was very young which was about early man struggling to control fire. He watched it spellbound over and over hundreds of times.”

Some other skills he has acquired include understanding 3,000 English words, pointing to lexigrams (or symbols), and using 500 words to communicate with humans. Though his mother was once the focus of study, she never picked up the skills like Kanzi did.

Credit: MaxAnimal

Undoubtedly, Kanzi would not be as skilled as he is today if he had not been raised in captivity and taught to start fires, cook his own food, and communicate in the English language. Regardless, his ability to do so is intriguing because it confirms that apes’ intelligence may extend beyond what humans previously thought.
